The small press superstars at Nieves just released a beautiful zine comprised of images from Spike’s new short film, I’m Here. Cinematographer Adam Kimmel’s gorgeous grain and seductively smoky light take center stage here, in a selection of stills that underline the exceptionally organic vibe of this subtle sci-fi tale. From Nieves:
Spike Jonze’s new half-hour short film titled I’m Here is a robot love story celebrating a life enriched by creativity. The movie is set in contemporary L.A., where life moves at a seemingly regular pace with the exception of a certain amount of robot residents who live among the population. A male robot librarian lives a solitary and methodical life – devoid of creativity, joy and passion – until he meets an adventurous and free spirited female robot.
Spike’s epic short film, I’m Here, makes its grand entrance tonight at Sundance. It’s a robot romance and a futuristic fable rooted in the universal emotions of first love, ruminating on youth, identity, autonomy and loss. What began as a small project in the wake of Where the Wild Things Are quickly blossomed into a 35-minute tale that provided Spike ample room to fully flesh out his melancholy heroes, a pair of robot lovers.
These clunky, sensitive machines feel as familiar as old friends by the end of the film, thanks in no small part to the same subtle special effects wizardry that brought the Wild Things’ facial features to life. Spike snapped the image above in the final screening to approve special effects shots before I’m Here’s worldwide premiere. If you’re in Utah today, don’t miss it!
Holy Moly, Aaron Rose is at it again. And he’s got every single one of our friends involved.
Roberts & Tilton is pleased to present Projections, a festival of rare and hard to see films organized by Aaron Rose. Opening on Saturday, January 16th and running through February 20, 2010, Projections will feature short and feature length films by 31 of the most influential filmmakers of our time.
Opening night we will be screening selections from the PROJECTIONS program, as well as a very special outdoor projection of Jonas Mekas’ legendary 1968 16mm masterpiece, Walden: Diaries, Notes and Sketches. This film features appearances by Jonas Mekas, Allen Ginsberg, Andy Warhol, Jack Smith, John Lennon, Yoko Ono, Edie Sedgwick, Hans Richter, The Velvet Underground and Nico.
Also for all of you who didn’t get a chance to see it We Were Once a Fairytale will be there too!
This should be a really amazing opportunity for those of you in the area to watch some truly rare gems. And the best part? It’s all free!
So as we reported a while back Spike has been hard at work on a new short film. It’s called “I’m Here” and it’s basically a robot love story. The details so far are pretty top secret but for those of you lucky enough to be headed to Sundance on January 21st you’ll be able to catch it at the opening night shorts program. More info as we’re able to release it!
Still trying to find the perfect holiday gift? Why not give Wholphin #9 to that special someone in your life? The latest issue of McSweeney’s always-impressive DVD magazine has something for everyone! Highlights include an electrifying Elmore Leonard adaptation directed by Joseph Gordon-Levitt (featuring amazing papercraft set design by Cat Solen), a scene from the most awkward acting class of all time, and a French animation about the bizarre side effects of getting hit by an asteroid.
But wait, I’m burying the lede: Wholphin #9 includes not one but three never-released short films directed by Spike! Marcel Dzama animates a glimpse at what really went on behind the scenes of Where the Wild Things Are, Sonny Gerasimowicz portrays Maurice Sendak’s viciously self-doubting inner demon, and Catherine Keener aides Spike in the dramatic reenactment of a distinctly Sendakian childhood memory from the 1939 World’s Fair. These tiny treasures will whet your appetite for the sumptuous special features that are sure to supplement the impending home video release of Where the Wild Things Are!
