Roky Erickson + Okkervil River + Dallas Clayton + Kids

Published May 15, 2010 by Rubin

ll

So it’s rare that we use WLYS to talk too much about the lives of the writers over here but we feel like this is a pretty rare happening, and anyone in Los Angeles with kids would be stoked to hear about it. As many of you might already know Roky Erickson is touring with Okkervil River- what you might not know is to help celebrate in an amazing way they are playing a secret FREE kids show at the Center For The Arts Eagle Rock. As if this weren’t already cool enough, WLYS co-creator Dallas Clayton is going to be reading and giving away copies of An Awesome Book as he sets off on a tour of the West Coast. Amazing? Amazing! Bring a kid, have some ice cream and enjoy!

Delorean

What’s this? The new video from the Barcelona based band Delorean?! Rad! “Stay Close” is the first single off the upcoming Subiza due out June 8th on True Panther Sounds (Girls, Tainlines) Delorean have been putting in work for quite some time now but on this record they’ve really come into their own with a nice mix of Spanish-influenced dance music and contemporary pop. It’s a memorizing release.

You can order it HERE and get an instant MP3 download of the entire album so you don’t have to wait till June.

Phantogram

phantogram

Phantogram is a duo from Saratoga Springs, NY and I’m pretty sure from the blog posting and comments I’ve seen and received directly this band made a lot of new fans by playing shows at SxSw this past week.

My friend Mike told me about the Phantogram record Eyelid Movies and I was really into it after a few listens. The synths, sampling, drum beats, melodic kinda 90’s sound with energy and the really pretty female / male vocals. It really grows on you quickly and I suggest you listen a few times and find the many videos floating around from their live performances.

Here We Go Magic

Here We Go Magic

As beautiful as the album cover above Luke Temple has taken his 4 track project and enlisted some more musicians to take his music to the next level. This first single “Collector” from Here We Go Magic’s new album Pigeons which will be available June 8th on Secretly Canadian (one of my favorite labels) and is his most driving upbeat track I’ve heard yet from him so far.

Dr. Dog has 2 songs floating around from their new album Shame, Shame due out April 6th from Anti. They always seems to take what they do best and just add a little bit to it each record which in turn never lets me down.

BRAHMS

Published March 10, 2010 by Rubin

Brahms

BRAHMS is the new project of Brooklyn based Cale Parks and Eric Lyle Lodwick (Vulture Reality.) I first discovered Cale Parks through his percussion, piano and vibraphone duties in the band Aloha (who just released a new record yesterday.) Since that band he’s released two solo records and played with one of my Ohio favorites White Williams.

BRAHMS are fairly new, have only recorded a 4 song demo, played a slew of shows around New York the last few months and are playing somewhere around 10 times at SXSW in the next week but somehow seem like they’ve been around a long time.

You can grab their 4 song demo (for free and that I listened to non stop all weekend) from the band by signing up to their mailing list at their website. Visit them on myspace/facebook, follow them on twitter or visit their blog. (they’ve got it all covered.)

Watch this beautiful video from Yours Truly of The Morning Benders (whom I’m proud to say are a local San Francisco band) playing the first track off their upcoming full length Big Echo. After listening to the album preview I can safely say this will be one of my go to records for the next few months.

White Hinterland

White Hinterland We Love You So

Casey Dienel (who goes by White Hinterland) is back with her new record Kairos which will be released in March on Dead Oceans. The sweet R&B beats mixed with pop goes well with her graceful soft voice (and reminds me of Dirty Projectors and Arthur Russel whom she’s done covers of.) It’s is a noticeable change from her more folkier sound of her earlier records and it really is a nice progression. The song “Icarus”, which is the first track on Kairos is perfect for the spring days that are on their way.
