Epic Supreme is the nom de design of Gregory Coats, a designer who roves among media like a hunter through the dark reaches of a magical forest. As it happens, magical forests figure into his arsenal of design inspiration, as do metallic inks, laser beams, and heavy metal.
We love the posters and screen prints on Coats’ website, and we especially dig his book design for ‘The Diamond Net” (above), an artist catalog featuring the work of Kara Tanaka and Richard Turner.
Occasionally you stumble upon a website that raises more questions than it provides answers. Sometimes this is a good thing. In the case of Special Reflection, it’s a great thing. The website collects drawings and posters and music by (we think) various people connected by some mechanism that we can’t quite divine.
Anyone out there have more information? If so, offer it up. If not, just enjoy the treasures of the site under the auspices of anonymity. After all: a good drawing is a good drawing, no matter who made it.
So it’s rare that we use WLYS to talk too much about the lives of the writers over here but we feel like this is a pretty rare happening, and anyone in Los Angeles with kids would be stoked to hear about it. As many of you might already know Roky Erickson is touring with Okkervil River- what you might not know is to help celebrate in an amazing way they are playing a secret FREE kids show at the Center For The Arts Eagle Rock. As if this weren’t already cool enough, WLYS co-creator Dallas Clayton is going to be reading and giving away copies of An Awesome Book as he sets off on a tour of the West Coast. Amazing? Amazing! Bring a kid, have some ice cream and enjoy!
Chrissie Miller’s NYC-based clothing line Sophomore, has spent the past few years making an impact pairing classic American styles with beautifully-lensed marketing campaigns. Her new lookbook is no exception. Based on the 1994 boardwalk youth documentary Wildwood NJ Miller’s short film, directed by Cass Bird, is who’s-who-of-young-NYC take on the original Jersey Shore cult classic. We would have posted the whole thing here but much like the original some of the language is a bit NSFW.
What’s this? The new video from the Barcelona based band Delorean?! Rad! “Stay Close” is the first single off the upcoming Subiza due out June 8th on True Panther Sounds (Girls, Tainlines) Delorean have been putting in work for quite some time now but on this record they’ve really come into their own with a nice mix of Spanish-influenced dance music and contemporary pop. It’s a memorizing release.
You can order it HERE and get an instant MP3 download of the entire album so you don’t have to wait till June.

Bindi Booth’s illustrations, prints, posters and textile designs have a palette of cherry-blossom pink, egg-cream white and French vanilla-yellow. They’re good enough to eat, in other words (though probably non-edible) and maintain a lusciously soft mood while still packing a punch on the printed page.
Booth also produces lovely hand-made and limited-edition folio books, which might be our new favorite collectibles. Check out the whole roster of projects here, and keep your eyes peeled for illustrations in places like Bust magazine.
Heart On Stage is a book-length collaboration between a Brazilian artist and illustrator (Luiz Risi) and a Finnish writer (Leena Yliportimo). The aim of the book isn’t simply to pair illustrations with poems, but rather to meld the two into a mutually-informative data stream that provides both intellectual and visual pleasure. A heady goal, but, from the looks of it, one that’s bound to be successful.
The project started with 400 poems “and the will to do something entertaining with them,” in the words of the two masterminds, both of whom currently live and work in Amsterdam. Check out the book’s progress here.
We love the weird, wild, and kitschy illustration and artwork of Theo Gennitsakis, who lends his prodigious talents to everything from type illustrations to flyers to album covers to the (above) ingenious memorial to Malcolm McLaren. Gennitsakis is also the Creative Director and Founder of La Surprise, a design agency whose slogan is “Audacity is the safest path.” That’s a good one.
Svartkonst— the Swedish curators of art and culture whose magazine and website we refer to constantly for inspiration—has now released Grim Pseudonym, a zine by artist Patrick Kyle. The full-color publication comes in a numbered edition of 99 and is available for order from the Svartkonst page. Another thing: it looks rad.
This Idea Book from Poketo is a tiny example of design genius. The pocket-sized notebook contains 128 pages total, half of which are butter-cup yellow graph paper and the other half of which are ingeniously designed to foster idea-making: a box in the top center of the page contains a space in which to write a Main Idea, while the surrounding boxes are to be used for brainstorming ancillary details. Rad!
Poketo is full of similar treasures: cherry-red Oktomat Cameras, ingenious Upcycled Suit totes, and fancifully illustrated wallets, to name a few. The company was founded by Ted Vadakan and Angie Myung and its name has the cutest origin story we’ve ever heard: “Poketo” is derived from a mispronunciation of the word, “pocket” propagated by Angie’s grandmother. We love it!
