Alvin Band

Okay, it’s never nice to start with such a direct comparison– but it’s hard to ignore the fact that some of Alvin Band’s songs sound a lot like Animal Collective. That’s not a detriment at all. The sound is similar, but not identical, and even if it were identical– that would be rad! Two Animal Collectives are better than one, right? Having just released a debut record entitled Mantis Preying, Alvin Band (the musical moniker of Rick Alvin Schaier, who also drums and sings in Miniature Tigers) has room for growth, and the project is certain to evolve in unique and exciting directions. Plus, this music video is just incredibly fun. I can’t not love something that pays homage to the glory of Let’s Paint TV.

the main difference between alvin band and animal collective is that alvin band takes you on one smooth journey with each album and each song has a distinct beat. animal collective often avoids choosing a beat and thus far animal collective has just been throwing songs together. it’s very difficult to listen to a whole animal collective album because it can be very abrasive to the ears, while sitting through Mantis Preying is one extended musical journey in which the melody ebbs and flows and Rick Schaier didn’t even need more than his mouth to accomplish it. alvin band > animal collective.

To the above comment, thats one of the reasons why I enjoy Animal Collective so much, every song is fresh and new and doesn’t sound anything like the one before. Their albums remind me of a kooky thought process, all different and jumbled up. I love them!

I’m also a huge fan of Alvin Band, such happy, fun music.
